Quality research needed to improve governance: Dr Ishrat Hussain


LAHORE: (Friday, May 20, 2016): Former Governor of State Bank Dr Ishrat Hussain has said quality research is required for improving governance in country and we can bring change in society through universities. He was addressing the inaugural ceremony of two day national conference on “Emerging Trends in Governance and Management in Pakistan” by Punjab University Institute of Administrative Sciences (IAS) at Pearl Continental’s Crystal Hall here on Friday. On this occasion Former Deputy Chairman Planning Commission Dr Nadeem Ul Haq, Abid Sherwani, Chairman HEC Punjab Dr Nizam-ud-Din, Director IAS Dr Nasira Jabeen, researchers from all over the country, faculty members and a large number of students were present.

Addressing the ceremony, Dr Ishrat Hussain said that the universities must become change agent of the society. He said despite there were deficiencies in every human being and nobody was perfect but we must find out and encourage good persons in our society. Addressing the ceremony, Dr Nadeem ul Haq said that there was need of ideas for resolving issues pertaining to governance and we could bring change in society. He said that there was lack of boldness in our research and that’s why it was not fruitful. He said that we had wasted trillions of rupees in various projects due to lack of appropriate research. He said that the government must be for rule of law, not for serving the king. He said that technology had transformed our way of working. He said that the menace of corruption existed in every country of the world and if we had a good system, we could cope with corruption. He said that we must decentralize power for improving our system. Dr Nizamuddin, Dr Nasira Jabeen and other researchers also addressed the conference.
